“ 'Tis the dragon slayer. He is driving the servants mad. He makes them wash their hands every time they use the privy. Moreover, he insists they replace the water in the lavabo every morn.”

Caryn raised her eyebrows in interest. She'd long thought the communal washbasin was an invitation to disease, and wondered if this had been confirmed in Luke's century.

“Now the man has gone too far!” Bessy's voice took on an uncharacteristic ring of hysteria. “He's ordered lye poured into the privy once a week. This is preposterous, Lady Caryn! He'll use so much ash that none will remain to make soap. The lassies are all in a twit.” Bessy stopped, caught her breath. “Please do not misunderstand me. The lassies feel affection for Sir Luke. Aye, who cannot? But his unreasonable demands have them running in circles. Why, do ye know he bathes each and every day?

And others are asking for the same privilege. Just this morn, I heard that ye...” Bessy's trailing voice suggested she thought she'd gone too far, a rarity for the healer, who was not one to keep her peace.

Caryn smiled. “ 'Tis a pleasant habit,” she replied. “Already, I have grown fond of it.”

“Ye do not worry that such frequent soaking will sap your strength?”

“I suppose.” This was said doubtfully. “Still, the lassies carina keep up, and the lads are grumbling louder, for they don't as easily fall under the spell of Sir Luke's charms. If his requests continue, we shall have to bring in folks from the fields just to haul the tubs up and down.” Bessy's bent shoulders straightened purposefully. “Can you not speak with him?”

Caryn put a hand on Bessy's bowed shoulders. “He merely wants the best for Lochlorraine, but clearly his pace is dizzying. I'll be eating the noon meal with him, I'll bring up these matters then.”

Bessy looked greatly relieved. “Thank you, Lady Caryn. Now if ye will excuse me, Nancy is dithering about his frequent laundering requests. I shall hurry to reassure her.” Before turning, she gave Caryn one of her piercing glances. “I may reassure her, may I not?”

Caryn suppressed a smile. “You may.”

After Bessy left, Caryn put away her supplies, took a sweet herself before closing the tin, then tidied up the apothecary, smiling all the time. On the day of the council, she'd given Luke permission to modernize the fief. She'd been so delighted that he was settling in, she'd not given a second thought to what havoc he might wreak. Well, she would talk to him soon.

Her smile widened in anticipation. So Luke thought the great hall font spread disease too? Intriguing. She was eager to discuss it, as all matters of health engaged her interest.

Pleased by that prospect, she walked to Randy's sickbed. The boy had slept through all the commotion. His state of health was still unsteady, but with such sound rest, improvement would surely come.

After readjusting the bedclothes, she went to
